About the Host City: Athens

Athens, the capital and largest city of Greece, stands as a vibrant metropolis where antiquity and modernity coexist in dynamic interplay. Situated in the region of Attica and boasting a recorded history exceeding 3,400 years, Athens is widely regarded as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy. This enduring legacy is rooted in its profound contributions to philosophy, political thought, the arts, and the sciences. It was the intellectual and civic nucleus of Classical antiquity, nurturing towering figures such as philosophers Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle; eminent statesmen and orators like Pericles and Demosthenes; tragedians such as Euripides; pioneering physicians like Hippocrates and Asclepius; and visionary reformers whose influence laid the foundational principles of democratic institutions.

At its heart lies the iconic Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, crowned by the Parthenon—one of the most celebrated architectural achievements of antiquity. Nearby, the Ancient Agora offers a glimpse into the political and social life of classical Athens, where citizens gathered to discuss and shape democracy. The city’s long history is also reflected in its layered architectural landscape, which includes Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman monuments alongside neoclassical and contemporary structures.

Athens also played a defining role in modern history. After becoming the capital of the newly established Greek state in 1833, it witnessed major development. Important modern landmarks such as the Hellenic Parliament and the Athens Trilogy—the National Library, University of Athens, and Academy of Athens—were constructed, linking the city’s classical ideals to its modern aspirations. In 1896, Athens hosted the first modern Olympic Games, and in 2004, welcomed the world once again, showcasing its transformation into a cosmopolitan capital.

Culturally rich and forward-looking, the city is home to world-class institutions like the National Archaeological Museum and the Acropolis Museum, which together preserve and present Greece’s cultural heritage. In recent years, Athens has reinvented itself with an energetic and creative spirit. The city has experienced a cultural resurgence, with new generations breathing life into its neighborhoods through art, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Areas like Psyri, Gazi, Thissio, and Exarchia have become hotspots for alternative art spaces, picturesque cafes, pop-up shops, and open-air cinemas, while neighborhoods such as Pagrati, Mets, and Chalandri flourish with youthful dynamism.

Athens is not just a city of the past; it is a city of contrast and continuity. From its historic core in Plaka and Monastiraki, filled with traditional tavernas and antique shops, to the daring architecture of its postindustrial zones, the city bridges eras with confidence. It remains central to Greece’s political and economic life while continuing to evolve as a global cultural hub.

Importantly, Athens offers natural beauty along with its urban charm. Just a short distance from the city center, one can find beaches, the Saronic Gulf islands, and the verdant slopes of Mountain Parnitha, making it an ideal base for both cultural exploration and outdoor excursions.

Athens not only celebrates its past but also embraces innovation and creativity, making it a fitting backdrop for discussions on bridging divides and fostering unity.
